Our latest cooking craze

One of the fun things about getting out and about is that it renews one’s desire to try things you’ve always wanted to do just can’t seem to find the time. Our little excursion to Montana refreshed Mark’s interest in Dutch oven cooking. Last Sunday we fried chicken.

We had to make do with a rigged-up version of a fire box and tripod to hang the kettle. In fact, I’m not sure this oven was meant to hang, but I’ll bet Cookie out on the trail drive did plenty of making-do, also! I soaked the chicken in buttermilk overnight just like The Pioneer Woman Cookbook  told me to.

It was just a bit over-cooked, but still oh-so-yummy!

So tonight was dessert night. Peach cobbler to be exact.

Exceedingly simple. It was just canned peaches (don’t imagine Cookie had fresh ones) a package of cake mix and butter. What could possibly be wrong with that!

It was windy today and a fire alert had been in place for our area, so, again, we improvised and lit a fire in the garage!

It smelled wonderful! It was hard to wait 45 minutes to take the lid off.

A scoop of Vanilla Bean ice cream on top (probably not available in Cookie’s day!) and we were set. It was pretty good.

What next, do you suppose? Apples? Steak? Fish? Beans?

  1. Yum!!! I’m coming to your house for supper! I have a dutch oven but it seems I never use it unless we go camping. And, then, it’s usually only used for frying bacon and eggs. I need to learn how to do this!
